Georgia Power customers to save at least $100 a year

(WTVM)- If
you are a Georgia Power customer, expect to see a present on your next billing
statement. The Public Service Commission recently approved a rate
reduction.  

The average customer who uses about 1,000 kilowatt hours will see about an $8
price break each month.  The change in price is due to a reduction in cost
to generate electricity.

Quitman County woman plead guilty in illegal gambling case

GEORGETOWN, GA (WTVM)- A Quitman County woman who was arrested for illegal gambling has now entered a plea.

Theresa Davis was arrested last year in an illegal gaming bust.

Quitman County Sheriff deputies along with members of the special task force teamed up to shut down an illegal gambling operation in Georgetown, Georgia on Highway 82.

Deputies collected about $3,000 from eight game machines. The game room had only been open for a couple of hours. Sheriff Steve Newton says that these types of operations usually make about $10,000 a week from illegal game machines.

New Ga. license plates available starting Monday

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's new license plates will be available statewide starting Monday.

The Georgia Department of Revenue says license plates issued prior to December 1, 2003, will be replaced either when owners renew their vehicle registration or when they register a vehicle for the first time. License plates issued after December 1, 2003 will be replaced.

The new car tag, designed by Linda Sosebee of Forsyth, was chosen from among 500 entries in a contest last year and features peaches in the foreground against a backdrop of green hills.

Governor Deal signs schools charter bill

(WTVM)- Governor Nathan Deal signed into law legislation that would give additional
options for Georgia's students.  The
bill, HB 797,
creates a state level approval process for charter schools whenever communities
request them.

 "Georgia's parents want more
options, and it is my duty as governor to see that they have them. These
schools help students trapped in underperforming schools and aid communities

WindTV: KidWind Challenge set for WINDPOWER 2012

Preston, GA woman wins $365,000 St. Jude Dream Home

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)-

More than 5,000 tickets were sold, bringing in a grand total of $551,367, and now the winner has been announced for the annual St. Jude Dream Home giveaway.

The winner of the $365,000 home is Joanne Blankenship of Preston, Georgia.

News Leader 9 talked to Mrs. Blankenship shortly after her name was announced live during the drawing and she tells us what the winning family has planned for the home.
